Advanced Symposium
The Advanced Symposium is an advanced level course for professional economic development practitioners. The Symposium provides attendees with an interactive learning environment taught by highly qualified professionals that include local practitioners, economic development experts, consultants, and private industry representatives. Successful completion of The Symposium will earn attendees the “SC Certified Economic Developer” (SCCED) certification.

The Institute
The South Carolina Economic Development Institute (The Institute), formerly known as The South Carolina Economic Development School (SCEDS), will offer a highly interactive curriculum to this year’s participants, affording them a greater “hands-on” economic development learning experience. The Institute, a thirty-two-year partnership between the South Carolina Department of Commerce and the South Carolina Economic Developers’ Association, has graduated more than 1,375 participants since its inception.
About The Institute
The Institute serves to educate those who support and participate in economic development activities in their communities while providing unique and innovative development approaches for implementation in local communities. Attendees who successfully complete each of the Institute’s four sessions will earn a Certificate of Completion. Who Should Attend? The Institute is open to participants from a wide variety of organizations and entities:
- City, Town and County Councils
- Local Economic Development Practitioners
- County Economic Development Boards
- County School Boards
- Regional Economic Development Boards
- Utility Companies
- Local/State Government
- Banks and many others
Economic Development Designation
Seeking Certification?
Those seeking certification status must first submit their application and resume to the SCCED Selection Committee for consideration and approval. Once approved, the individual must successfully complete the SC Economic Developers’ Advanced Symposium.
Pre-qualifying requirements include:
- Current SCEDA member,
- A majority of daily job responsibilities committed to economic development activities, and
- A minimum of:
- five (5) years of experience in economic development
- four (4) years experience and completion of SCEDI/BEDC*
- a minimum of three (3) year of experience in economic development with certificate from EDI* – or
- a university degree in economic development.
*Completion within the past five (5) years.
