60 Years of Sharing Solutions
SCEDA celebrated its 60th Annual Conference May 6–8, 2026, at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa, bringing together economic development professionals, business leaders, consultants, and partners from across the state for three days of education, networking, and recognition.
The conference opened Wednesday with networking opportunities, including the Golf Tournament at Port Royal Golf Club, a boat charter excursion, the New Member and First-Time Attendee Reception, and the Welcome Reception overlooking the coast.
Thursday’s programming featured a strong lineup of speakers and panel discussions focused on the future of economic development in South Carolina. SCEDA President Tavia Gaddy welcomed attendees and recognized the many sponsors whose support made the conference possible.
Conference attendees heard remarks from Harry Lightsey III, Secretary of the South Carolina Department of Commerce, who provided updates on the state’s economic outlook and continued growth opportunities across South Carolina.
Additional sessions explored legislative priorities, infrastructure, energy, logistics, and foreign direct investment. Highlights included “The Ferrara Project” panel moderated by Mark Farris, an update from South Carolina Ports Authority President and CEO Micah Mallace, a discussion on the State of Energy in South Carolina led by James Chavez, and Friday’s global investment panel moderated by Jonathan Cleave.
The conference also celebrated the accomplishments of SCEDA members and future industry leaders during the annual awards and scholarship presentations.
The 2026 Truman H. Safford Basic Economic Development Scholarship was awarded to Jonathan Bennett of Lexington County, while Darlene Sparks of Sumter County/TheLINK received the 2026 Irwin Maceo Nance South Carolina Economic Development Institute Award.
SCEDA also recognized outstanding leadership and service within the profession. Garrett Dragano received the 2026 SCEDA Rising Star Award, honoring emerging excellence in economic development, while John Wall was recognized as SCEDA’s Ally of the Year for his leadership, advocacy, and continued support of economic development initiatives across South Carolina.
During the annual business meeting, members recognized outgoing board members Erin Cole and Sam Moses for their service and leadership contributions to the organization. Immediate Past President Rick Farmer was also honored for his years of dedicated service to the SCEDA Board of Directors.
Members voted to approve the incoming 2026–2027 Board of Directors, officially welcoming John Truluck as incoming President alongside Vice President Melvin Williams, Treasurer Kris Phillips, Secretary Jamie Frost, and Past President Tavia Gaddy.
A special highlight of this year’s conference was the continued growth and impact of SCEDA Women, including a heartfelt call to action video for SCEDA member Ashley Richardson.
Beyond the educational sessions, attendees enjoyed numerous networking opportunities throughout the conference, including mentor meetups, beachside activities, hospitality events, and the themed “Decades in Duet” evening reception that featured dueling pianos.
SCEDA also extended appreciation to the many sponsors whose continued investment supports the association’s mission and programming throughout the year.
The conference concluded Friday with final sessions on data centers, South Carolina’s global competitiveness, and a celebration of the golf tournament winners before attendees departed Hilton Head inspired and energized for the year ahead.
